Cheapest Lens to DIY

If you ever wanted to do a fun little project for your camera and photography, there’s a thing called a “Dispolens”. Whether that the official name or not, but it’s essentially just slapping a disposable camera lens to your mirrorless camera. Yes, it seems to only work for a mirrorless camera due to the positioning of the lens. This not a setup for any I would use beyond the fun novelty of it. It kind of replicates the “look” of the disposable camera and even more so if you color grade in such a way.

I picked up a two pack of these Kodak FunSavers for about $20.

You open up to find one of these bad boys inside.

First, you peel up the stickers from the bottom of the camera to expose the film tab. You can try to roll of the film and save it for later or give to a friend or throw it away. It doesn’t really matter. You need to open up the tab so you can slide off the battery cover. Then remove the battery so you don’t shock yourself.

Then pop off the tabs on the top and sides to open of the camera to expose the lens.

Unscrew the two screws to free the lens from the body.

Then you grab a body cap for your camera and drill a hole in the center.

Ideally, you drill a hole just enough for the lens to fit and stay in due to the pressure fit, but if not it’s not a big deal. After you can just glue it to secure the lens to the cap.

I made one for my Sony A7SII which was used for the sample images. The other was for a EF mount Canon which doesn’t work. I tested it out at night and during the day. The image quality for sure is straight garbage, but it’s mostly just for fun. Keep in mind for even your cheapest most basic lens, there’s multiple pieces of glass and coatings while this is a tiny piece of plastic. From what I’ve read, the lens is a 30mm f/10 so low light is not ideal for it. The Sony was doing most of the heavy lifting here to compensate. All you can really control is the shutter speed and the ISO since there’s no aperture or focus control whatsoever. The benefit is that you always have a lens not matter what since it’s embedded into your body cap now.
